Last night at our Wednesday Bible Study at The Blue Point Bible Church we pondered the following questions:
What do you know about Yom Kippur?
How does a Biblical look at Yom Kippur benefit a follower of Jesus Christ in 2025?
We looked at the following Bible texts – Leviticus 16:2-34, 23:1, 26-32; Colossians 2:16-17; Hebrews 9:1, 6-28
Our findings;
The Feasts of the Lord outline in the Law of Moses help us better understand the work of Jesus Christ and the importance and covenantal nature of eschatology.
The details in Leviticus regarding Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, highlight the necessary ceremonial details that were to accompany marking it out and how it “covered” the people (the Hebrew word aphar used for “atone” means to cover.
Yom Kippur, like the beginning and end of the Bible, is all about the presence of God.
Yom Kippur highlights the correlation between sin and death. Yes, physical and covenantal.
There were various offerings for Yom Kippur – the sin offering, the burnt offering, and scapegoat, which each refer to work of Jesus Christ in atoning His people from sin.
The high priest would accomplish a 2-time, going in and coming out, on behalf of himself and the people. Christ’s death, burial and resurrection correspond to the first going in and coming out. The ‘second time’ refers to the ascension of Jesus Christ and His ‘second coming’.
As one studies and learn that ever since the destruction of the Temple in AD 70 the Old Covenant ceremonies can no longer be performed, it becomes easier to discern how these feasts found their fulfillment in Jesus Christ and what that has provided for us in Jesus Christ.
The eternal redemption of God’s people through Jesus Christ points to His presence and purpose as an eternal inheritance.
